Sagrada Família Bag Policy: What Bags Are Allowed Inside?

What Bags and Backpacks Are Allowed at Sagrada Família?

Small handbags and daypacks generally under 35x25x20cm are permitted at Sagrada Família, subject to security checks. Large backpacks and rolling luggage should be stored before your visit.

For bags larger than 35x25x20cm, Luggage Storage Vault offers secure, automated lockers at Carrer de Padilla 275, about a 3-minute walk from the Basilica’s Marina entrance.

Arriving With a Bag That May Not Be Allowed Inside?

If you are carrying extra-large backpacks, rucksacks, rolling luggage or another large bag that may not be accepted at security, arrange storage before reaching the Basilica. Luggage Storage Vault offers secure automated lockers and is about a 3-minute walk from the main entrance on Carrer de Marina. View locker sizes, prices and availability.

What Bags Are Not Allowed Inside Sagrada Família?

You will be refused entry with:

  • Rolling suitcases or wheeled luggage
  • Large hiking backpacks and rucksacks (internal/external frames)
  • Sports bags, duffels, or gym bags
  • Oversized professional camera tripods
  • Any item that cannot be carried comfortably in a crowd

If your bag is refused at the Marina entrance, you will be turned away until it is stored elsewhere. If you then miss your timed entry you may not be permitted entry.

What Should I Do If My Bag Is Too Large for Sagrada Família?

If your suitcase, backpack or other bag is too large or otherwise unsuitable for entry, store it before joining the security queue so you do not have to leave the entrance and return later. Sagrada Família does not provide general luggage storage for visitors arriving with suitcases or large bags.

Your practical options are:

  • Leave the bag with your hotel or accommodation, if they offer luggage storage
  • Use an independent luggage storage facility nearby before your timed entry

Sagrada Família's own lockers are not general left-luggage storage. They are only available to tower visitors, who must leave bags and rucksacks in them temporarily before ascending and collect them after returning.

For nearby locker sizes, prices and availability, visit Luggage Storage Vault, about a 3-minute walk from the main entrance on Carrer de Marina.

“Super well located near Sagrada Família. Fully automated and super easy to use.” — Marc L., Google Review

Are Backpacks Allowed in Sagrada Família?

Yes! Small backpacks and daypacks are allowed, but they will be scanned at security. The Sagrada Família officially recommends not bringing large backpacks, rucksacks or rolling luggage at all, as they slow down the screening process and create longer queues.

If you have a tower ticket, bags and rucksacks must be left temporarily in the tower lockers before ascending and collected again when you return. These lockers are reserved for tower visitors and are not available as general luggage storage before or after your visit.

Can I Bring Food, Water, or a Camera Inside Sagrada Família?

Food and drinks are not allowed inside the Sagrada Família. This includes water bottles, snacks, and takeaway items. Security will ask you to dispose of them or leave them outside.

Personal cameras and phones are allowed. You can photograph freely for personal use inside the Basilica. However, professional photo/video equipment (including tripods and lighting rigs) requires written authorisation from the foundation and will be refused at security without it.

If you need to store a bag before visiting Sagrada Família, security matters. See our guide Are Luggage Storage Lockers Near Sagrada Família Safe? for what to know before leaving your luggage nearby.

What is the Sagrada Família Dress Code?

The Sagrada Família is an active Catholic church and enforces a dress code at the entrance. Visitors who do not comply may be refused entry, even with a valid ticket.

Official dress code rules (from sagradafamilia.org):

  • Trousers, shorts, and skirts must reach at least mid-thigh
  • No see-through clothing
  • No swimwear or beachwear
  • No hats inside the nave or museum (except for religious, health, or belief-related reasons)
  • No bare feet — footwear is required
  • Bare shoulders are not permitted in the Chapel of the Holy Sacrament
  • No costumes, promotional clothing, or attention-seeking decorations

If you're visiting in summer, pack a light shawl or cardigan to cover your shoulders if needed. There are clothing shops along Carrer de Sardenya near the Passion Facade if you need a last-minute fix.
